The Garrafa name is not Italian in origin. I think it is Portuguese. I have found more Garrafa's in Portugal and the Carribbean than in Italy.
Domenico Garrafa & His wife Giuseppina Ferrante
Many Napolitano's and Garrafa's married. My Grandfather Giuseppe Napolitano was an orphan by the age of 15. After his mother's death in 1907 he lived with his Uncle Domenico Garrafa and his second wife Giuseppina Ferranti and his children from both wives. Domenico Garrafa's first wife was Emilia Napolitano the sister of my Great Grandmother Angelina. Domenico and Emilia's daughter, Maria Concetta married Giuseppe Napolitano (a second cousin of my Grandfather) in 1905. In 1912 Maria Concetta joined her husband in Chicago never to return to the place of her birth. The Garrafa's took in my Grandfather, Giuseppe Napolitano and his half brothers and sisters from his mother's second marriage to Raffaele DeSeta. Or so I have been told. The Garrafa genealogy will be on this page. We will start with Uncle Domenico of the Parantoro section of Montalto Uffugo.

GARRAFA IMMIGRATION
In this section I will document the immigration records I have found for Garrafa's into Argentina. Please see the Montalto Uffugo immigration page to see Garrafa's who came to the U.S.
Immigration Out Of Montalto Uffugo
South America
The majority of immigrants who left Italy did not immigrate to the United States. Two out of every 3 immigrants left Italy for South America. The majority of these went to Brasil and Argentina. I will list here possible Montalto Uffugo immigrants. Please note that the South American ship records were not as detailed as the Ellis Island ship records. The town of origin was not listed. The records below are of people with the surname Garrafa (not a common name in Italy) who immigrated from Italy to South America. Their ages and names have been compared to birth records of Garrafa's and compared against other marriage and death records. These Garrafa's disappeared from the state civil records of Montalto Uffugo. The Garrafa's I list here match the age and profession of the Garrafa's from Montalto Uffugo. Since the town of origin is not listed in these records, the list below is my best guess. I may be wrong.
ARGENTINA
Remigio Garrafa's ship record lists him as 20 years old. He sailed from Genova and arrived in Argentina on December 10, 1898 on the Savoia. Remigio's profession is listed as a farmer and his religion is Catholic. This all matches Remigio Garrafa, son of Gennaro Garrafa and Maria Napolitano. He was born in 1878 which would make his age 20 in 1898.
His mother, Maria Concetta Napolitano was the daughter of Arcangelo Napolitano and Maria Teresa Chimenti. Maria died in 1910.
Amalia Garrafa is listed as 30 years old in 1913. This matches Amalia Garrafa who was born in 1883 to Pietro Garrafa and Luisa Napolitano. Since the state civil records available through the LDS end in 1910 currently, I cannot verify that she dropped out of the records there. Her ship record lists her entering Argentina as a married woman on ship Algerie which departed from Genova and entered Argentina on September 21, 1913. She was Catholic.
Angelo Garrafa, as he is listed on the ship manifest was 18 years old when he entered Argentina on November 10, 1907. His ship departed from Genova and was listed as a laborer. This matches Angelo Raffaele Garrafa, son of Luigi Garrafa and Maria Carmela Napolitano who was born in 1889.
Ernesto Garrafa immigrated at the age of 16 sailing from the Port of Genova on the ship Italia. He is listed as Catholic. He entered Argentina on November 10, 1907. It seems he came in with Angelo (see above). Ernesto's age would make his birth year 1891 which would make him the son of Domenico Garrafa and Giuseppina Ferrante. The same Domenico Garrafa who took my Grandfather into his home when his mother died.
Pictured here: Ernesto Garrafa, son of Domenico Garrafa & Giuseppina Ferrante, with his wife Rosa Zingone (also born in Montalto Uffugo) and their children in Argentina.
Leticia & Alicia Garrafa, born in Argentina are the daughters of Giuseppe Garrafa, son of Emilia Napolitano and Domenico Garrafa. I have never found immigration records for Giuseppe Garrafa.
