Giuseppe Napolitano's Family
PARANTORO, MONTALTO UFFUGO,
COSENZA PROVINCE, ITALY
My grandfather's father and both his grandfathers were property owners and millers. What exactly they milled I have not figured out yet. I know they must have had a vineyard because I know they made enough wine to sell. They were also farmers.

About Giuseppe Napolitano
Since I have never found his ship record, we are not sure when he came to America. The family story says he was 17 which would probably make the year 1910. But a recent dicovery in Italy has proven that he did not come to the United States before May, 1912. The discovery is Giuseppe's Italian Army registration, in which it documents the results of his physical. Giuseppe reported for his Army physical, which he passed. In May, 1912 he lived in Paola and was 19. Here is a copy of the 2 page registration:
This document states that his profession was a mule driver. So, the family stories that say he came here at 17 are wrong. Unless, like his cousin he came to the U.S., went back to Italy and left one final time for the U.S. But if that is the case, why can't I find any ship manifests?
Giuseppe joined the United States Army in 1917 according to his registration card below. His army service helped him gain his US citizenship which he obtained in Atlanta, Georgia. He was stationed at Camp Gordon, Georgia and was the private chef of the General there. The great outbreak of influenza hit Camp Gordon during his time there which prevented deployment to Europe in World War I. Giuseppe earned his chef's certificate there. He was honorably discharged in December, 1918.
This is a copy of Giuseppe's U.S. Army registration card. Click on the picture for a larger view. It states he was a chef at a country club in Deerfield, Illinois. Deerfield? No one knew he was there before. This is proof that he was a chef prior to his service in the Army.
The Chicago Years
Giuseppe returned to Chicago from his service in the Army in January, 1919. In April, 1919 he married Caterina Maiuolo. As you can see above, it was a huge family wedding. The wedding party alone consisted of 14 people. There are only 5 people in this photo that we can identify. All the men (except the groom) are unknown to everyone living. Perhaps you know them?
The Chicago Club
Chef Joe in the kitchen of The Chicago Club
Once he returned from his military service, Joe obtained a job as Chef at The Chicago Club on Michigan Avenue. He remained employed there until his death in 1949.

The kitchen of the Chicago Club circa 1930's - my grandfather is the only chef in the back. My thanks to Liz who restored this photograph.
