There are many surnames in Montalto Uffugo. While researching my family in the available records, I noticed slight variations in some of the surnames over the years. I have researched the records at this point from 1858-1910. I am continuing my research back and will be ordering the earlier 1850's soon. The changes seemed to take place in the 1870's. Since I started by research in the 1890's - the time of my grandfather's birth I had become familiar with certain names that were linked to my family repeatedly. One of these names, DeSeta disappeared from the records of the 1860's. Instead, DiSeta was the surname. In examining these records closer, I realized they were the same people. The surname changed. Every single DiSeta became DeSeta sometime around 1870. I looked at other surnames that were similiar. DeLio, DeLuca, etc. So far DeLuca's were always DeLuca - The name did not change. DeLio was DiLio in the 1860's - so far I have not noticed any DeLio surnames prior to 1870. After 1870 there remained 2 variations of the name. Some families went with DeLio while others remained DiLio. Why this occurred, I do not know but I wanted to make a note of it here.
Another noteworthy name variation seems to have occurred during immigration. After careful examination a surname I thought was LoFendo because Ellis Island records showed that named spelled that way, in actually LoFeudo. I discovered this by accident while looking through a surname database on the internet. I looked again at my LoFendo records, and the name was LoFeudo.
I will be unable to publish every surname in Montalto Uffugo here. But I can publish the most common surnames in the comune that I have seen in the Stato Civale records. I will list as many as I can here and as I find more, I will add them.
