LEGEND
An ancient legend exists in the province dating back to 410 AD about King Alaric, King of the conquering Visgoths. The legend states that once the King conquered Rome, he headed south, conquering and collecting wonderful treasures and he progressed into the south. Once he reached where the Crati river and the Bucenta river met, he died suddenly. These rivers meet in the heart of Cosenza. It is said that his soldiers, along with the help of slaves, buried the King under the river, along with his horse and all the treasure, by redirectly the river long enough to build the tomb. His troops then killed all the slaves so no one would know where the treasure was.

Cosenza Province's Patron Saint

The Patron Saint of Cosenza Province is a native son of Paola. Saint Francesco di Paola. He was born in 1416 and died in 1507.
Paola has a santuary built in his honor and every April a huge feast occurs during his feast day, April 2.
Saint Francesco is the Patron Saint of many comunes in the province as well. His parents were pious people, who after many years of a childless marriage, sought the interecession of St. Francis of Assisi. Francesco was the first born of 3 children and no doubt was named after St. Francis of Assisi. He was a hermit monk who lived in caves in Paola. He was devoted to St. Francis of Assisi and began a new order of Franciscan Monks the Minim Friars - minim indicating the lowest. He was a very humble and devoted servant of God.
