Catanzaro Province is located just south of Cosenza Province. It is the slimmest area of Italy - just 50 kilometers across from sea to sea. Because of this, the Italians sometimes refer to it as "La Terra di Due Mari".

It was founded in the 9th century by the Byzantines to control the mountain pass between the Ioian Sea and the Tyrhenian Sea. Since the 11th century Catanzaro has been known for it's production of fine lace and silkworm breeding which has been exported throughout Europe. For centuries the Vatican has ordered it's laces and linens as well as many of the Royal Houses of Europe. This capital city boasts a Norman castle built in 1060.
A smaller province...
The Province Of Catanzaro currently has 80 comunes. All the comunes are listed in the right border of this page. It used to be larger until the early 1990's when the province was split into 3 provinces. On March 6, 1992, the Province of Vibo Valentia was created out of the western portion of the province. In 1996 Crotone was created out of the eastern portion of the province. This is important to know when researching the area. All records prior to the 1990's will be listed under Catanzaro Province in archives, libraries, books, etc.
